Batak

Batak is a variant of the popular trick-taking card game Spades. It is also known by various names such as Oh Hell!, Blackout, Nomination Whist, Elevator (l'Ascenseur in France), Boerenbridge, or 10 op en neer in the Netherlands, and German Bridge in Hong Kong.

A standard 52-card deck is used in Batak. The cards in each suit rank from high to low as A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2, with 13 cards dealt to each player.

The gameplay involves a player leading the first card, with each subsequent player required to follow suit if possible. If not, the player must play the trump card or any other suit if they have no trump. The player with the highest value card (either the trump card or the led suit if no trump was played) wins the trick and proceeds to lead the next one. Play continues until all tricks have been played and won.

There are two variations of the game: simple and auction. In the simple version, players bid on the number of tricks they believe they can win in that hand and then strive to fulfill that bid. In the auction game, the player with the highest bid wins the auction and must fulfill their bid, while other players aim to win at least one trick.
